2. Research on important factors to consider during the designing.

3. Create samples of the design.

4. Plan the construction schedule.

Your team will be involved in conducting a survey to identify what aspects of Chung Cheng High is attractive to students and what aspects of Chung Cheng High needs to be changed. Results will help the school in attracting Primary students as well as to work towards a better learning environment for present students.

What you need to do:

  • Design and think of questions that will allow the school to identify what are the good and bad aspects of the school.
  • Conduct the survey.
  • Analyze the results and come up with a report for the school.

    Title: Planning a CIP activity

    Students will plan and implement a CIP project for all secondary two pupils that will engage pupils in services that meet community needs. These projects will enable students to realize the learning outcomes of CIP.

    What you need to do:

    Students will plan and implement CIP programmes like; Beach Cleaning, Recycling Projects, Tutoring and Mentoring Schemes and Marking art and craft and Selling them to Raise Funds for the needy pupils in our school. These programmes will be carried out as a post exam activity except for the tutoring scheme.

    What do you gain by doing this project:

    Students will learn to plan and carry out a project on an ad-hoc basis. Students will also have to liaise with external agencies on their own thereby building up their self-confidence and communications skills.

    Title: Design an outdoor fitness corner and running circuit for the school.

    What you need to do:

  • Decide on the exercise equipment and types of stations required.
  • Suggest a location for the fitness corner within the school campus.
  • Propose a proper running circuit within the school.
  • Prepare a model or composite layout of the fitness corner
  • What do you gain by doing this project:

  • Understand aerobic and anaerobic exercise activities
  • Gain an understanding on how to improve overall physical fitness
  • If the project is accepted, you will have a Fitness Corner designed to suit your own needs which can be used during your free time. It can also be used for PE lessons and CCAs (games and uniformed groups).

    Title: Scouts

    You are the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) of Panther Scout unit in Chung Cheng High School (Main), and have been assigned the following tasks to be completed within a 5 months’ period.

  • Planning the Scouts Camp 2003 ( 3 days / 2 nights during June holidays)
  • Organising community services for Scouts
  • Organising a campfire during June holidays
  • What you need to do:

  • Scouts camp: Students need to organize a camp filled with activities that enhance adventure learning as well as leadership training. They will also need to run the whole camp and hold evaluations at the end of each day.
  • Community services: Students need to liaise with charity organizations or homes that promote the charitable and compassion spirit and assess how the scouts can carry out these services.
  • Campfire: Students are to organize a campfire for the Katong District filled with campfire activities (skits, songs, cheers, dances) that enhance the sense of brotherhood among scouts units from other schools.

  • You get a chance to prove your leadership and organizational skills. You gain satisfaction in your ability to organize and run the camp.
  • You gain exposure and experience through working with other organizations. You earn the respect of others and uphold the spirit of scouting by helping others.

    Pupils will work on an original script. Directing and rehearsing their own performance will follow this. Productions will be considered for outstanding scripting and acting.

    Project Title:

    To collect discarded objects or materials and turn them into a useful and creative device or artefact.

    What you need to do:

  • Brainstorm for ideas on possible and feasible devices or artefacts to be constructed.
  • Decide on one device or artefact which satisfies the following criteria:
  • Originality and Innovativeness; Feasibility; Practicality; Functionality or Usability; Saleable; Workmanship. Size must not be bigger than two cubic feet or 0.06 cubic metre.
  • Submit a proposal
  • Plan the schedule of construction of the device (takes how long to complete)
  • Source for the recycled / discarded materials or objects (not to be bought)
  • Plan how to make use of collected materials
  • Construct the device or artefact, which may be sent for competition at Ngee Ann polytechnic.
  • Design a poster to describe how the device or artefact is constructed, its function, its purpose and the materials used.
  • Prepare a report and do a short presentation. (to promote your product)
  • What do you gain by doing this project:

  • Learn how to write proposal and design a product of your own.
  • Learn how to use technology to make posters.
  • Your group may get a chance to participate in Ngee Ann Polytechnic Engineering Made Fun Competition in February 2003 and win attractive prizes. Your submission will be displayed during the Ngee Ann Polytechnic Open House 2003.
  • If your product is a winning piece in the competition, you will do yourself and the school proud. Your product may even be marketed in the country.
  • Appreciate the importance of recycling materials so as to help reduce pollution and to save the environment.

    Title: National Art Competition

    Students will plan and collaborate in crafting a series of artworks with the aim to participate in National Art Competitions. These artworks could in the Realist/ Stylized or abstract reflections of their interpretation of emotions & feeling that are happen around them & the world. Mainly media of work involved will be Relief (2D or/and 3D) with the use of acrylic paint on Plywood Board or Canvases.

    What you need to do:

  • Overall planning & discussion of themes to develop the series
  • Group discussion of theme but diverging developing of ideas before selection of appropriate mock-up to work
  • Media: Visual & Oral presentation of communication of artwork
  • Considerations of Venue of display & the state of finishes of the Artworks

    Title: Product Invention

    Students will work in groups of 3 to look into problems which people come across in our daily lives; observe and analyse the issues at hand, and generate creative proposals to solve those problems. Students are encouraged to look into Product Invention - appliances, electronic products, furniture, sports equipment, etc. The main criteria of judging are originality, practicality and creativity of the invention.

    What you need to do:

    Process documentation: A project report should include the: planning stage, implementation stage and evaluation stage. This should include innovation made as well as difficulties encountered and the solutions that were implemented.

    Product Invention aims to provide pupils with opportunities to explore the inter-relationships and inter-connectedness of subject-specific knowledge. Pupils will be able to:

  • Apply creative and critical thinking skills
  • Improve communication skills (both oral and written)

    Title: Building training equipments so as to make the trainings more value added and effective.

    What you need to do:

  • Discussion and plan a schedule. Discussion should be thorough so as to minimize unnecessary problems during the process of the project. Seek opinions from coaches and teachers if need to.
  • Seek approval in order to source for money.
  • Stick to budget when building the equipments.
  • Delegate jobs and start building it, making necessary adjustments along the way.
  • When completed, pilot test on a few players first.
  • When satisfied, use it during trainings to see if it works, get opinions from the teacher-in-charge and coaches to see if it is feasible to produce a few more of other training equipments.

    Title: Innovating a Classroom Cleaning Gadget

    You are working in a company that designs cleaning gadget. MOE has invited your company to write up a business proposal as well as the prototype of a cleaning gadget that can be used in classroom.

    What you need to do:

    You will be working in one of the following department:

    Marketing and Finance Department (M&F), Research and Development Department (R&D).

  • The M&F Department consists of 5 members and their task is to write out a business plan for the product invented by the company.
  • The R&D Department is made up of two groups of five each. Each sub-division will look into the invention of at least one cleaning gadget.
  • What do you gain by doing this project:

  • You will get to design and build the prototype of your cleaning gadget.
  • You will be the first to use the gadget that your group has designed in your classroom.
  • Your group will get a chance to participate in competition such as Business Plan/YDA/WITs
  • If your design is proved to be a feasible solution, the school will use your inventions in all classes.

    Title: Metamorphosis

    You are a young and ambitious graduate who wants to be an entrepreneur. Together with your friends from college, you have set up your own company – Metamorphosis.

    Your first assignment is to take an existing product in the market which you find flawed and modify it to better suit the current consumers’ taste and requirement. Subsequently, your company will launch this modified and more superior version to the market.

    What you need to do:

    You will be working in one of the following departments:

    Business Research Department, Marketing Department, Sales & Advertising Department and Design & Technology Department.

  • The Business Research Deparment consists of two teams of researchers in charge of either pre-product launch or post-product launch research, i.e. these researchers will either conduct market research on the product that is to be modified or conduct research on the performance of modified product.
  • The Design and Technology Department is in charge of modifying the product according to the technical specifications set by the Business Research team.
  • The Marketing Deparment will assess the market and decide how best to launch the modified product.
  • The Sales & Advertising Department is made up of two teams of dynamic personnel. Based on the research by the Marketing Department, one team will come up with an advertisement/ commercial while the other will write a sales proposal detailing how best to sell and promote the modified product.
  • What you gain by doing this project:

    Depending on which department you are working in, you will learn one or more of these:

  • How to conduct market research?
  • How to carry out data analysis?
  • How to write business reports/ proposals?
  • How to make technical modifications to a product? (For Design and Technology Department)

  • Work with NTU/NUS on the manufacture of such materials.
  • Invent a product from these materials.

    You are working in a company that designs websites. MOE has invited you to research on good educational resources on the World Wide Web which will facilitate and enhance self and e-learning of the following subjects: Maths, D&T and Science. You will then design a website for the particular subject.

    What you need to do:

    You will be working in 1 of the 3 teams for each of the subjects. Each team will:

  • research on good educational resources on the World Wide Web for the particular subject you are assigned to;
  • brainstorm on what makes a good educational website;
  • design a website for the subject; and
  • promote the website to MOE and convince them why it is good.
  • In particular, the resources that you found must be relevant to the syllabus and suitable for students and teachers in Singapore to use.

    You will learn how to create/design a website using the relevant software; and gain knowledge on the subject that you research.

    Title: Chinese Prose

    Through creative IT presentation, to bring Chinese prose closer to the hearts of the pupils. This allows pupils to know that Chinese prose is not dry and boring, it is also not difficult to learn, and can be interesting.

    What you need to do:

  • Each group to choose 3 pieces of Chinese prose.
  • Each piece to be presented creatively in the from of songs (self made), short stories, cross-talk, skit, drawings (models, etc), the end-products to be in IT presentation style, powerpoint / multi media IT creations.
  • All 3 pieces of the Chinese prose must be different in the style, ie, not all 3 pieces of prose in the form of songs.
  • The end product needs to be packaged, ie, there needs to be a cover design and a theme to the end product.
  • However, the project work is based on the quality of the content and not on the cover design.
  • What you will gain:

    1. Pupils to get to know the Chinese prose with wider and deeper scope.

    2. A more creative and fun way of learning Chinese prose.

    3. Those well done pieces with creativity would be selected to present in "Chinese Prose Appreciation" to be proposed to the School

    Project Title: Bye Bye to Bird Shit

    You are part of a project team to develop the best product to help get rid of bird waste stains deposited on cars. The product has to be effective in its purpose, but not detrimental to the car surface or windscreen. This product will be marketed first to Chung Cheng High staff, then the parents of the students. The marketing possibilities will be limitless.

    What you need to do:

  • Collect samples of bird waste and analyse its contents
  • Do research regarding which is the best sovent for the waste
  • Make an analysis of which solvent to use, paying particular attention not to affect the car surface or the windscreen
  • What do you gain by doing this project:

  • You will get to learn more about Chemical Analysis, a topic you will be learning in Sec 3 Chemistry
  • You will get to explore the world of solvents
  • You will practice problem-solving skills in deciding the final constituents of the product
  • You will apply simple product design and marketing skills

    Title: Story-Based Painting

    To construct a perspective view of a story-based original painting (in acrylic) for display. Students will be taught on how a painting is produced and to paint like an artist. They will create a masterpiece of art for display based on a story they like. There is no report product but an exhibition of your individual piece of work is required (A2 size canvas)

    What you need to do:

  • Read your favourite book and discuss the layout composition
  • Try out sketching and life drawing to master art skill
  • Learn about colours in acrylic painting and colour mixing
  • Learn about the techniques of brush painting
  • Plan actual painting (single piece or multiple sets)
  • Paint for 4 – 6 sessions to completion
  • Exhibit work for display in Aesthetic gallery

  • Learn the basics of a painting skill like a professional artist
  • Understand the steps to making an art composition

    Miss Sharmila Tanapathy

    Title: Create, write, act in and direct your own sitcom

    Students are to create one season of a sitcom (18 – 20 episodes). Each episode is to span 20 minutes. They are to come up with original characters and sitcom titles. They are to write full transcripts of each episode, which includes dialogue between characters as well as on and off stage directions. The sitcom can be presented as a recorded episode (via video camera) or as a live stage performance. This requires students to choose one specific episode from the entire season prepared, for their presentation.

    What you need to do:

  • Brainstorm for ideas on the genre of the sitcom
  • Commit your ideas to paper, ie. a typed up script of each episode should be submitted (containing stage directions, settings, dialogue and actions).
  • Each episode is to span 20 minutes and there should be 18-20 episodes created for your entire project.
  • The presentation of the project can be in the form of a video or a live stage performance (trailers are optional).
  • Originality in all areas are pertinent to the project and will carry out heavy weightage.
  • What do you gain by doing this project:

    This project enables students to refine their language skills while gaining appreciation of the background work that goes into creating the sitcoms that they tune into every week. It also helps stimulate creativity among pupils who are encouraged to come up with original ideas for their scripts. It even helps to promote a love for the Arts among teenagers, something that the government is trying to instil in all as well.

    Title: Language use in Singapore

    Students will embark on a research project related to issues on English language use in Singapore. Working in groups of 4-5 students each, students will go through the research process of formulation of the research thesis, a brief literature study and finally the use of a survey(s) to collect data for analysis. At the end of their project, the group is expected to submit a written report and highlight their key findings in a brief 15- 20-minute presentation.

    What you need to do:

  • Choose a topic for research, related to issues on English language use in Singapore
  • Formulate a thesis statement
